Born in 2003 in Brazil, a country deeply affected by the escalating climate crisis, I grew up witnessing the profound impact of extreme weather events.
From devastating floods and relentless storms to ravaging wildfires and prolonged droughts, these occurrences seemed to haunt every region I visited, earning me the playful nickname of a “disaster magnet” from my grandparents.
Though their jest was light-hearted, each disaster left an indelible mark, fostering a deep-seated concern for our planet’s future.
As I progressed through high school, my studies in correlation versus causation, alongside subjects like history, biology, and chemistry, provided a clearer understanding of the environmental legacies left by preceding generations. This knowledge helped temper the superstition of personal culpability in climate events, yet the frequency and severity of global disasters continued to weigh heavily on my mind.
In 2022, a transformative opportunity arose with my selection to join the 2041 ClimateForce Antarctica Expedition led by the 2041 Foundation. This expedition brought together 172 leaders from diverse disciplines across 35 countries, uniting us in a mission to raise awareness about climate change and forge actionable solutions.
Amidst workshops, speaker panels, and firsthand experiences of Antarctica’s dynamic climate, I witnessed the tangible impacts of climate change.
Antarctica’s volatile weather patterns delivered unexpected lessons: unseasonal rainfall, record-breaking heatwaves, and the sudden collapse of a colossal ice shelf. These events starkly underscored the urgency of global climate action and the intricate interplay of Earth’s ecosystems.
Returning home, my resolve to advocate for environmental stewardship has only deepened. I carry with me a renewed belief – that by sharing my experiences and mobilizing others, we can collectively drive positive change. I aspire to be a catalyst for a sustainable future, where every action, no matter how small, contributes to preserving our planet for generations to come.
Since my return, I’ve engaged actively in local initiatives promoting sustainable practices and climate awareness.
I’ve collaborated with community groups to organize educational workshops on climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. These efforts aim to empower individuals and communities to take meaningful steps towards environmental resilience.
Reflecting on Antarctica’s pristine yet vulnerable ecosystem, I’ve come to appreciate the interconnectedness of global climate systems and the profound impact of human activities on our planet. The expedition underscored the urgency of preserving Antarctica’s environmental integrity, not only for its intrinsic value but also for its critical role in regulating global climate patterns.
As I continue my journey, I am committed to advocating for policies that prioritize environmental sustainability and climate resilience on a global scale. I believe in the power of education, advocacy, and collective action to shape a future where humanity lives in harmony with nature.
Each of us has a role to play in safeguarding our planet for future generations, and I am determined to contribute positively to this shared responsibility.
